Stump grinding vs. stump removal: what's the difference?

Stump grinding vs. stump removal: what's the difference?

If you've got a stump in your yard, you've probably seen both terms thrown around. They're related but not the same, and knowing the difference helps you pick the right service.

Stump grinding uses a machine to chip the stump down to several inches below ground level. The roots stay in the soil and break down naturally over time. It's faster, cheaper, and far less disruptive to the surrounding lawn.

Full stump removal pulls the entire root ball out of the ground. It leaves a large hole and is much more invasive — usually only worth it if you're putting in a foundation or large structure where the roots would be in the way.

For the vast majority of homeowners in eastern Iowa, grinding is the right call. You get a level spot ready for grass within minutes, and you skip the big crater. If you're unsure which you need, send us a photo and we'll tell you straight.
